Although the Gitex Hyderabad exhibition is not due to take place for another four months the event is already causing a stir in Dubai in the hope that it will encourage further international interest and new markets to the country's IT sector.
Due to take place from January 7-9, 2002, the exhibition will be staged in conjunction with the government of Andhra Pradesh. Mohammad Al Gergawi, Director General of the Dubai Technology, E-commerce and Media Free Zone Authority, told reporters this week that he fully supports the exhibition and says that many companies based in the Dubai Internet City (DIC) plan to participate in the exhibition.
He told the local press: 'The move to expand Gitex into India, extending its reach beyond the borders of the Middle East region, holds significant potential for the continued growth and development of Dubai's IT sector. As IT companies in India become familiar with the region's goal to serve as an IT hub and the opportunities DIC presents, we are confident they will investigate ways to broaden their international presence. Establishing a Middle East presence in the UAE markets, could well be the first step for many.'
Last year, in excess of 500 exhibitors representing around 1,500 companies participated in the annual event of Gitex Dubai which has become widely regarded as the major IT event of the year in the region since its inception in 1981. The exhibition is so successful that other countries have followed suit such as the Gitex Cairo and Gitex Beirut.
Wahid Attalla, general manager of the Dubai World Trade Centre, said: 'We are particularly thankful for the support numerous staff at Dubai Internet City have offered to help ensure the success of our move to expand the Gitex name beyond the Middle East.'
He added: 'More than 26 per cent of Indian IT professionals in the U.S. hail from Andhra Pradesh and there are numerous parallels between the goals both Dubai and Hyderabad are striving to achieve in relation to sustained economic growth based on their information technology sectors.'
