Passengers flying from Dubai’s International Airport are to be charged an additional 30 dirhams ($8.20) in taxation from September as extra revenues are sought to fund airport expansion.
According to a report by Gulf Daily News, the Department of Civil Aviation is expected to receive around 300 million dirhams ($81.7 million) per year from the levy known as the Passenger Service Charge.
Defending the move, Shekh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum, DCA president and chairman of the airline Emirates, told Gulf News:
"We have created a world class facility for passengers and airlines at Dubai International Airport and we are investing further in expanding these facilities to add comfort to passengers."
“In the developed countries, passengers have (long) been paying charges for the services. Other airports in the region are also introducing service charges,” he added.
Amongst other taxes paid by passengers departing from Dubai airport are a 130 dirham fuel surcharge, a 100 dirham distribution tax and a 20 dirham insurance surcharge.
