Dominican Republic Aims For NAFTA Membership

by Mike Godfrey, Tax-News.com, Washington

01 July 2002

President Hipólito Mejía of the Dominican Republic has proposed that a free trade agreement should be negotiated with the US, as a precursor to full membership of NAFTA for the Caribbean tourist destination, which is trying to break a centuries-long dependence on sugar and bananas as staple exports.

United States president, George W. Bush, welcomed the proposal, as economist Hugo Guiliani Cury was designated as a new ambassador to the US. The Dominican President explained that Guiliani Cury will go to the US with the objective of leading a team of negotiators that will aim for the elimination of commercial barriers and trade obstacles between the two countries, especially in respect of the Dominican Free Zone.

The President emphasised that the private sector would be fully involved in achieving the Government's strategy. Mr Mejía said that the United States is the main commercial partner of the Dominican Republic and that there is political will in both nations to strengthen and consolidate their co-operation.
