The Barbadian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador June Clarke, and her Irish counterpart, Richard Ryan, have signed a Joint Declaration establishing formal relations between the two states.
The two countries have enjoyed a history of cooperation and the Joint Declaration paves the way for them to work more closely and collaborate on common areas of interest. It is expected that attention will be focused on the development of the services sectors, particularly the role of financial services will be enhanced along with the use of information technology as a vehicle for the reform and modernization of the public sector. The development of the small enterprises sector is also of crucial importance to both countries.
Over the years, Ireland has become a model for small countries seeking to develop by combining enterprise with information technology. Barbados, like Ireland, is currently realising economic benefits from the innovative application of its human resources to the area of financial and other services. The mutual support now officially established will be of significant benefit to both countries.
