It emerged this week that international law firm, Denton Wilde Sapte is to quit the Asian market completely, after more than 30 years in the region.
The move will affect around 100 staff in the firm's Hong Kong, Beijing, Tokyo and Singapore offices, and has come as something of a surprise given the trend towards expansion in the region kick-started by China's WTO membership.
A strategic review of Denton's operations conducted by its main office in the UK is understood to have concluded that the firm's Asian operations were not integral to its future.
According to a South China Morning Post report on Tuesday, the firm declined to officially comment on the move, but an unnamed source at its Hong Kong office confirmed that the Asian operations were being axed, revealing that staff had been informed last Wednesday.
