Computer manufacturer, Dell has denied that the My Way Search Assistant which comes pre-loaded onto its desktop and notebook products constitutes spyware.
The My Way Speedbar is a search toolbar which installs itself into Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator and other major web browsers, adding search functions and blocking pop-ups.
According to anti-spyware firm, Sunbelt Software:
"While it has some desired features, it does anonymously report your surfing activity when on a My Way or My Way affiliated site, helping their product serve you targeted advertising based on (the) surfing habits of its users. Based on their End User License Agreement, they may also choose to correlate the anonymous surfing habits with your personal profile if you sign up for anything while on their sites."
However, Dell has denied that the Search Assistant monitors user activity, and has revealed that the product can be disabled using the options menu.
