Speaking to a Treasury sub-committee on Wednesday, UK Paymaster-General, Dawn Primarolo dismissed criticism of the Inland Revenue's online self-assessment service, which was suspended at the end of May, arguing that the software problems which brought SA Online to a grinding halt had 'happened to other online providers'.
Ms Primarolo admitted that the temporary suspension of the service was disappointing, but told the sub-committee that the system was sound (apart from displaying taxpayer information online for all to see, that is!)
The Financial Times quoted the Paymaster-General as announcing that: 'Our system was going well and we were improving take-up'.
However, according to the business daily, there still remains a substantial amount of room for improvement - last year, only 79,000 out of an estimated 9 million possible self-assessment returns were filed via the internet.
There have been no announcements made as yet as to when the online service is likely to resume.
