Officials from member states due to participate in the Caricom Single Market Economy (CSME) initiative met last week to begin training in the use of a new database designed to track the movement of skilled workers around the region.
The database, which was developed by the Statistical Department of the CARICOM Secretariat in collaboration with the Directorate of Human and Social Development and the CSME Unit, is designed to provide member states with timely information on the free movement of skilled nationals.
Member states will be required to submit the compiled information to the CARICOM Secretariat quarterly, to enable the organisation to determine regional trends as they relate to the movement of skilled nationals in the CSME.
It is expected that this mechanism will alleviate the concerns of certain countries with regard to "overflooding" of skilled nationals.
