As hedge funds report their results for April, it is emerging that most alternative investment funds suffered a negative performance last month, with fund managers reporting an average loss of 1.76% according to hedge fund data firm CogentHedge.

Consequently, losses were suffered across most strategies last month and one of the worst hit strategies was managed futures, losing an average of 5.51%, whilst all single manager funds lost an average of 1.97% (1.42% if futures are excluded). Funds of funds however, exhibited more modest losses, losing an average of 0.70% for the month.

Year to date performance by contrast, remains firmly in the black says Cogent, reporting that 71% of hedge funds remain in positive territory for the year.
