Danish Minister Of Taxes Rules On Internet Gaming Ads

by Ulrika Lomas, Tax-News.com, Brussels

21 August 2001

Frode Sørensen, Denmark's Minister of Taxes, has warned that Internet advertisements and banners for online betting sites and casinos with live links are illegal and any Danish web site found hosting such ads could face jail and heavy fines.

Under Danish law gambling sites are not illegal providing they are issued with an operational licence, and they can advertise on other third party web sites if there are no live links; otherwise those third party web sites will be deemed to be illegally running a betting service.

The Danish government runs the "Tipstjenesten" lotteries which generates high revenues, much of the profit going to support the sport and culture industries, and the government is eager to protect its own revenue from the highly competitive online gaming ads.

The Minister has argued that even bookmakers and casinos which operate outside of Denmark will not be allowed to place ads with live connections to their operations on Danish-based web sites. Last week, Europemedia.net reported on an electronic Danish newspaper which was charged with posting a live link to a foreign bookmaker. The web site was fined DKK100,000 (E13,333) by the Ministry of Taxation, and the editor faces a possible jail sentence.
