The Copenhagen City Court has rejected professional golfer Søren Hansen's claim that he has been tax resident in Monaco since 1999 in a victory for the Danish tax authority.
The court argued that the golfer retained significant ties to Denmark and was therefore liable to Danish tax on earnings during 2002 and 2006.
Hansen received a fine of DKK8m (USD1.35m) and has been ordered to pay a further DKK8m in back taxes following the ruling. The court ruled that Hansen had not evaded tax however, and therefore he did not receive a prison sentence. Hansen, who has maintained that he is resident in Monaco throughout the case, will have the opportunity to appeal the decision.
Rationalizing the ruling, the judge said the court had found that Hansen owned property in Hornbæk, which he on occasion stayed at, and that he also stayed with his girlfriend in her Copenhagen apartment.
