The Dubai Naturalization and Residency Department (DNRD) on Monday denied suggestions in the national media that expatriates will automatically become eligible for citizenship in the Emirate after twenty years.
According to reports in the media - now revealed to be erroneous by the DNRD - the Department's director, Brigadier Saeed Bin Bleilah had stated that expats who had been in the country for two decades or more could apply for citizenship, and would have their applications reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
However, in a statement released on Monday, he sought to clarify the situation, announcing that:
"The impression conveyed by newspaper reports that all expatriates residing in Dubai for more than 20 years will be eligible for UAE passports is wrong. Moreover, such matters are beyond the purview of the DNRD."
