According to reports, the Cypriot government has asked the European Union to grant patents for four of the country's signature products, namely: halloumi, soudjoukos, coumandaria, and zivania.
The EU committee in charge of issuing patents is set to meet next week, and is expected to grant protection to the geographical marks and to the provenance names of the agricultural and food products.
However, in order for the committee to consider granting the patents, the Cypriot authorities must first pass a raft of new legislation. This stipulation is designed to ensure that the jurisdiction can enforce the necessary legislation, regulations, and administrative orders.
Additional conditions likely to be imposed on the granting of the four patents are: that the product must come from a specific geographical area only, that the method of production must be described in detail, and that the EU authorities must be furnished with a full account of the contents of the product.
