The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Demetris Christofias, received on Thursday at the Presidential Palace members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the British Parliament.

After the meeting, Sir John Stanley, head of the Foreign Affairs Committee group visiting Cyprus, made the following statement:

"The British Foreign Affairs Committee is making their second visit here in the last 18 months. We were last here in January 2007 and we have come here because the Committee decided that with the election results here there was a very important opportunity opening up for both communities in the island of Cyprus to reach a settlement of the problem of this island.

"We are having a wide ranging session of talks with the leaders of both communities. We are very encouraged by what we have heard so far. The British Parliament and all three major political parties are represented here today.

"The British Parliaments are wholly behind the two communities in the island of Cyprus in their efforts to try to reach a settlement. We wish you every possible success.

"We hope that a settlement will be achieved in the road to the near future and we are in no doubt that if a settlement can be achieved, it will be in the best interest of both communities, will enhance the prosperity of Cyprus and will mean a very successful, long-term, assured future for the island of Cyprus."
