The government of Cyprus strengthened its determination to wage war against terrorism last week as President Glafcos Clerides officially signed the International Convention to Combat the Financing of Terrorism.
At the ratification ceremony on 30 November, Ambassador Sotos Zackheos renewed Cyprus's pledge to contribute to the struggle against terrorism. The Ambassador pointed out that the struggle against terrorism is an issue that concerns the whole of mankind and the terrorist attacks of 11 September have strengthened the international community's will to combat terrorism which he described as a threat against universal principles and values.
According to a statement from the government, the Director of the General Secretariat of the United Nations Mr Politha Kohona relayed the UN Secretary General's satisfaction with the rapid ratification of the Convention by the Cyprus Republic.
To date, 121 countries have signed the Convention and Cyprus is the 15th country internationally to ratify the convention, which will come into force once it has been ratified by 22 member states.
