The Cypriot government's tax reform plans will be the subject of debate for a sub-committee of the House Finance Committee, reports online news service, xak.com. The sub-committee will be formed by one member representing each of the parliamentary parties and the Finance Minister, Takis Clerides, will be invited for consultation purposes.

The sub-committee will meet to discuss the tax proposals immediately after the Christmas holidays. House Finance Committee Chairman Markos Kyprianou has confirmed that the committee aims to study the tax reforms in detail for as long as it takes.

Speculation on when the parliamentary talks will take place has continued for some time now. In October house members hit back at the criticism that they were responsible for the delay in the introduction of the tax reforms. House Finance Committee Chairman Markos Kyprianou said at the time that the government had not submitted the proposals, 'it is the government that is causing delays, not parliament,' he said.

But when the members finally received the written proposals in mid-November they called for a two-week period in which to mull them. Once the Christmas break is over one can't help wondering what the next excuse will be!
