Some 36 bills have been tabled, or will soon go before the House of Representatives as Cyprus enters the final stages of compliance with the acquis communautaire, Harmonisation Coordinator Takis Hadjidemetriou told a press conference last week.
The bills are being readied for approval by the House of Representatives at an extraordinary session on September 18 this year. Furthermore, Hadjidemetriou said that 23 more bills will be ready by the end of the month. 'Our time limits are tight because the work for our final meeting in Brussels on September 25 has begun', he observed.
The Harmonisation Coordinator also informed reporters that discussions on European Union Structural and Cohesion Funds worth an estimate 154 million euros are due to commence in the near future. He also spoke of the possibility of a set of goodwill gestures to be extended to the Turkish Cypriots in time for the visit of Commissioners Loyola de Palacio and Michel Barnier to Cyprus in the autumn.
According to Hadjidemetriou, a report released by the Economic Intelligence Unit on EU Enlargement has found Cyprus to be the first new EU nation to achieve the EU average per capita GDP.
