The Cypriot government reported earlier this week that it has appointed new ambassadors to the Republic of Ireland and the Czech Republic.

According to a government statement, the new ambassador to the RoI, Mr A. Kakouris, presented his credentials to Irish President, Mary McAleese last Wednesday, and - somewhat ironically, given the current division in Ireland over the pro-enlargement Nice Treaty - thanked her for her country's support in finding a solution to the Cyprus problem, and for its help during the EU accession process.

Meanwhile, Mr Christoforos Yiangou, Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe was appointed last Tuesday as the ambassador to the Czech Republic. Mr Yiangou reportedly conveyed President Clerides' greetings to the Czech President, Mr Veclar Havel, and stressed the need for further cooperation between the two countries, which are both part of the new batch of EU hopefuls.
