Two of the current batch of EU accession hopefuls, Cyprus and Malta this week expressed their gratitude to the Irish people, who voted on Saturday to support the pro-enlargement Nice treaty.
Voters in the Irish Republic supported the treaty by a margin of 62.9% to 37.1%, leading a spokesman for the Cypriot government to announce on Sunday that:
'Cyprus wishes to express grateful thanks to the Irish people, who by their vote, brought the enlargement of the European Union one step closer. One more obstacle has been overcome and the final decision to be taken in Copenhagen is now closer to us.'
'We continue our efforts for accession firmly and earnestly, hoping that through our hard work and correct policy, Cyprus will soon realise its dream and become a member of the EU.'
In Malta meanwhile, where political opinion is highly divided on the potential benefits of EU membership, Prime Minister, Eddie Fenech Adami reportedly expressed great satisfaction at the result, whilst Opposition leader, Alfred Sant merely commented that the outcome of the vote was 'expected'.
