Cypriot police chief, Andreas Angelides tendered his resignation to President Glafcos Clerides on Wednesday, amidst a growing scandal over import tax evasion on luxury cars.
According to a Reuters report, senior figures in the police force have been implicated in a scam which involved importing top-of-the-range vehicles as scrap, thus defrauding the government of thousands of pounds in import duties.
'The case has severely dented public confidence in the police and, to many, reinforced a view that corruption runs deep in the Cypriot establishment without any apparent effort to tackle it,' the news service observed, clearly referring back to the collapse of the stock market bubble in 2000 which swept away the life savings of many Cypriot investors, and sparked allegations of insider trading and securities fraud.
Mr Angelides' resignation follows the announcement on Tuesday that Justice Minister, Nicos Koshis is to step down from government. However, Mr Koshis refused to comment on the reasons for his departure, according to Reuters.
