Cypriot Civil Service Accused Of Wasting Taxpayers' Money

The Cyprus Mail has reported on a 350-page Auditor-general's report that has concluded that the civil service's mismanagement of the public sector has wasted taxpayer cash.

Auditor-general Chrystalla Georkadji said the civil service did not have the necessary management systems in place which has led to problems in planning and co-ordination, and big delays in finalising projects. 'The public sector has weaknesses due to the philosophy and the way it functions,' she said.

For example, according to the report the government's inability to agree on the new site for the House of Representatives has cost £650,000 in studies. In the meantime improvements to the old building are expected to cost around CYP3 million. 'The biggest weakness is planning and coordination in executing large construction projects,' added Georkadji.
