The Customs Department of Mauritius Revenue Authority and the Association of Professional Freight Forwarders late last week signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two organisations.

The MOU aims to help the Customs authorities and freight forwarders to further develop cooperation and consultation, with a view to combatting Customs laws infringements, and securing the trade supply chain from potential terrorist threats, transnational organised crimes and other related offences.

It will also allow freight forwarders to have a better understanding of the tasks and problems faced by the Customs authorities and vice-versa, thereby facilitating a productive exchange of information between the two parties.

Furthermore, the agreement makes provision for practical ways in which personnel of freight forwarding companies and their agents can assist Customs authorities in the detection of Customs offences.
