Customs Agreement Extension Doesn't Imply Recognition Of Cyprus, Says Erdogan

Speaking on Wednesday following a meeting with UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, Turkish PM Tayyip Erdogan reiterated that the signing of a protocol extending an existing customs agreement to the ten new EU member states would not imply a recognition of Cyprus, despite speculation on the matter.

Turkey had been expected to sign the protocol on Wednesday, and subscribing to the agreement has been made a condition of the commencement of Turkey's membership negotiations.

Speaking to reporters earlier this week, Erdogan announced that:

"There will be no change on the recognition question until there is a settlement."

An official declaration on the matter is expected soon.
