According to reports in the Irish media last week, Finance Minister Brian Cowen is set to travel to Brussels to plead the case for the Republic's stud fee tax exemption before the European Commission.
In February of this year, the EC ordered the Irish government to dismantle the tax break, which has been instrumental in securing the Irish bloodstock industry's leading status internationally, arguing that it constitutes illegal state aid.
However, Mr Cowen reportedly plans to counter that the tax exemption was put in place before Ireland joined the European Union, and therefore falls outside the EC's remit as European regulator.
Under current rules, fee income for covers of mares by stallions is free from income tax, a perk which is especially important for the owners of well-known and successful sires.
