Ireland's Taoiseach, Brian Cowen TD, held extensive discussions on Monday with a high-level US congressional delegation led by Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, Senator Thad Newton of Mississippi and Senator Richard Shelby of Alabama.

In the course of the wide-ranging talks, the Taoiseach stressed the importance of the growing trade and business relationship between Ireland and the United States, and the importance of developing the relationship between Ireland and America in the new all-island era of peace and prosperity.

He also set out his vision for investment in education, innovation and infrastructure, and the development of the all-island economy as key elements for the future success of the Irish economy.

In response to comments by the US representatives on the success of Ireland in the European Union, he stressed the importance of a successful outcome to the Lisbon Treaty referendum next month.
