A recent change in Costa Rica’s Customs Law enables residents to import up to $500 worth of personal goods tax free every six months without leaving the country, the Tico Times reports.
Under the previous customs regime, residents were required to remain outside of Costa Rica’s borders for a minimum of 72 hours before they were permitted to bring in their allowance of duty-free goods.
However, whilst the new system is simpler and more beneficial to Costa Rican residents (including those of foreign origin), the disadvantage is that only one tax-free package of up to $500 can be brought in every six months.
The new rules have been operational since March, and were ushered in as part of wider customs reforms underway in Costa Rica. The rules apply to any persons residing in the country, regardless of residential status.
“It's for anyone: students, foreigners, pensionados, rentistas,” Customs spokesman Rubén Quesada was quoted as announcing by the Tico Times.
