According to a report from the AM Costa Rica news service on Wednesday, the jurisdiction is struggling to keep around $300 million in agricultural exports free from a 20% import duty under the European Union's Generalized System of Trade Preferences.
The newspaper revealed that Costa Rican President. Abel Pacheco on Tuesday asked Spanish President, Jose Maria Aznar to intercede on Costa Rica's behalf, in order to exclude certain of its agricultural products from the import tax.
The country's agricultural industry currently provides employment for some 35,000 people, according to AM Costa Rica, and the impact of the proposed duty on this sector would likely be devastating.
