The Co-operative Group on Friday revealed that it will be among the first to offer general retail legal services to the UK public.
Proposals put forward by the Lord Chancellor, Lord Falconer were dubbed the "Tesco Law" reforms at the time of their introduction, following the supermarket's announcement that it had launched an online legal service covering will-writing, divorce, letting agreements, residential renting agreements and small business start-ups.
Co-operative Legal Services (CLS) reportedly intends to offer a number of general legal services, including probate, claims management support, will-writing, and conveyancing.
Explaining that the firm intends to capitalise on its good ethical reputation, Co-op's chief executive, Martin Beaumont told the Legal Week news service that:
"The combination of a proven management team, first-class products and services backed by the Co-operative brand will provide a compelling proposition in a market that has not always enjoyed the total confidence of consumers."
The new unit will be headed by former RAC legal chief, Eddie Ryan.
