The government of the Cook Islands remains committed to policies that “support the expansion of economic opportunity and sound governance of public resources" it was revealed in the budget statement earlier this month.
“The Cook Islands Government's Budget Policy Statement for 2004/2005 embraces a philosophy of advancing the participation of all Cook Islanders in determining their own future,” the Democratic Party government’s statement announced, continuing:
“For the 2004/2005 Budget Appropriation, Government has chosen to build upon the six National Outcomes of Good Governance, Social Progression, Economic Sustainability, Infrastructure Support, Outer Islands Development, and Environmental Management.”
The statement added that the government will continue its commitment to present a “fiscally and morally responsible budget” and will operate a holding budget until a new Government is elected later this year.
Funding levels to Ministries and Crown Agencies will be similar to those of the 2003/04 financial year, when Ministries were requested to take a 10% cut in their appropriations.
The government also plans to release a supplementary budget later in the financial year to implement existing policies, as well as the new initiatives highlighted in the Budget Policy Statement.
