French President Nicolas Sarkozy has finally put an end to speculation surrounding a controversial tax amnesty proposed by president of the National Assembly, Bernard Accoyer.
According to Accoyer, enticing large taxpayers to reinvest their capital in France would help to finance the flagging French economy by offering a welcome tax break to compatriots under the proviso that they agree to fund large state loans. This would enable the banking sector to ride out the current international economic storms, he argues.
Although the government did not initially rule out the idea, spokesman Luc Chatel has now dismissed the suggestion of a tax amnesty, emphasising that such a move would not reflect efforts to achieve full European co-operation.
Martin Hirsch, who has an official role in fighting poverty (Haut Commissionaire de Solidarités actives), was also among those who vehemently opposed the proposition.
