Speaking to the Caribbean media this week, executive director of the Jamaican Fair Trading Commission (FTC), Barbara Lee, revealed that a Caricom competition statute is currently being compiled in preparation for the establishment of the Caricom Single Market and Economy (CSME).
In an interview with the Jamaica Information Service, Ms Lee announced that the attorney generals of Caricom member states and competition agency representatives from the region have been meeting to discuss the planned statute, which is likely to be based on Jamaica's Fair Competition Act. She went on to explain that this was due to the fact that the island, along with Barbados, is recognised as a regional leader in this field.
The new policy document is designed to address 'uncompetitive conduct within the region and to regulate cross border issues between countries in Caricom', according to the FTC executive director.
She explained that it will contain provisions for the establishment of a Caricom Competition Commission, which will have the power to send appeals to the Caribbean Court of Justice.
