The European Commission committee that is considering British legislation allowing residents of Gibraltar to vote in European Parliament elections should arrive at a decision this week after an earlier announcement expected last week was postponed.
According to a report in Gibraltar’s online news service Panorama, it appears that a legal opinion is favouring the British position, though a final decision was postponed to allow Britain and Spain to discuss the issue.
The issue at stake is whether voting rights extend not only to Gibraltarians but to residents of the Rock who originate from 'third' countries, namely British colonies and dependent territories, of which there are about 300 according to Panorama. The Spanish government is objecting to this prospect arguing that it could have profound implications for the definition of European Union citizenship.
