In a statement released on Monday in response to consultation papers on legal reform, law firm Clifford Chance broadly supported the UK government's proposals.
Regarding the establishment of a Judicial Appointments Committee, the firm backed the plan, but warned that the need for diversity in the judiciary should not overshadow merit as a criteria for appointment of judges.
It also agreed that a new Supreme Court should be created to take over the existing appellate jurisdiction of the House of Lords.
With regard to the abolition of the rank of QC, the UK law firm announced that:
"On balance, Clifford Chance considers that the rank of QC as it currently exists should be replaced by a professionally awarded quality rank, as the State should not be involved in granting distinctions to members of an independent profession."
It continued: "If the rank of QC is abolished, it should be replaced by a quality mark awarded by the profession that confers no privileges and does not distort competition, and it is available to all lawyers in all fields of practice."
