Chinese premier Wen Jiabao has announced that no more funding will be added to the country's current stimulus package, but added that the government will boost spending over the coming months.
Addressing the National People's Congress, the Premier announced that the country's CNY4 trillion (USD585bn) economic stimulus package would not be increased, as many had anticipated.
Instead, he revealed, the government will work on an alternative plan to boost spending, so that an 8% economic growth target is achieved.
Speculation had mounted in the days prior to Wen's announcement that the government would introduce another stimulus package to the economy - a notion that was reflected in a surge of stockmarket activity.
It has been predicted that China will see a fiscal deficit of around 3% this year.
