The Chinese government announced last week that it will be eliminating tariffs on 251 information technology products, including mobile telecoms base stations, computers, printers, fax machines, resistors, transistors, and integrated circuits.
In preparation for the country's accession to the World Trade Organisation last year China, along with 56 other countries, signed the Information Technology Agreement, committing itself to eliminating duties on the vast majority of imported information technology products.
According to the government, progress on this is good, with 122 products exempted from import tax at the beginning of this year, and reductions from an average rate of 12.47% to 3.4% on the remaining IT products.
The Ministry of Information Industry announced on Friday that the government hoped to have zero tariffs on 'most' IT products imported into China by 2003.
