China Toughens Controls On Internet News Providers

by Mary Swire, for LawAndTax-News.com, Hong Kong

28 September 2005

It emerged at the weekend that the Chinese authorities have imposed new, tougher restrictions on the content of internet news sites.

Announcing the changes on Sunday, Xinhua, the state news agency, explained that:

"The state bans the spreading of any news with content that is against national security and public interest."

Under the updated rules, internet news sites will need to be "directed toward serving the people and socialism and insist on correct guidance of public opinion for maintaining national and public interests".

Established news providers will need permission to provide news to the Chinese population, and new operators will need to register with government information offices.
