China’s Vice Minister of Commerce Liao Xiaoqi indicated last week that the Chinese government is willing to extend support towards the Bahamas in its bid to become a member of the World trade Organisation.
According to the Nassau Guardian, Bahamian Minister of Trade and Industry Leslie Miller was told by the Chinese government official that China placed much importance on bi-lateral trade ties with the Bahamas and hopes further progress can be made in this area.
The Bahamas imported around $1.5 billion worth of consumer goods last year, though much of the Chinese imports arrived via the United States and it is known that the Bahamas wants more direct Chinese involvement in the economy. Figures quoted in the Guardian from official Chinese government sources show that bi-lateral trade increased 80% year on year in the first eight months of 2003.
The Bahamas’ WTO accession process is due to be initiated by a working party early next year and China is expected to be a member of the group, the Guardian reported the Trade and Industry Minister as saying.
