China Telecom Seeks To Impose Controls On VoIP

According to recent reports in the national media, China Telecom is looking to put in place controls which will prevent Chinese internet users from installing and using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services such as Skype.

The firm, which is China's largest fixed line operator, is reportedly concerned that such services pose a threat to its business.

Therefore, according to the Beijing Business Today newspaper, it intends to impose measures such as preventing internet users in China from logging onto the Skype server, and monitoring and controlling data volume along its lines in order to intercept and end online calls.

The controls are expected to be imposed in 2006 or 2007.
