After pro-Beijing newspaper Wen Wei Po reported on Saturday that the Central Government was studying ways of helping Hong Kong revive its sluggish economy, a senior Government official has told Hong Kong representatives that China would definitely help out if the SAR ran into serious financial difficulties.
Chen Zuoer, the deputy director of the State Council's Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, said the two SARs and the mainland were one big family and were supposed to help each other. He said that if Macau and Hong Kong ran into difficulties, Beijing would not "stand there and look on''.
Premier Zhu Rongji also gave an assurance that the Central Government would continue to support the government led by Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa and the Macau SAR government headed by by Edmund Ho Hau-wah. Speaking at a rally marking the 52nd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Mr Zhu pledged that the mainland would enhance economic exchanges with Hong Kong and Macau to maintain their stability and prosperity.
The Beijing Government is expected to announce new measures in the middle of this month to improve economic relations with its post-colonial children, and has asked all provincial governments to extend their full support for Hong Kong's economic development.
