It emerged this week that the Chinese authorities have shut down more than 100 websites for copyright violation, under new regulations which came into force last month.
The new rules are an attempt to prevent the unauthorised uploading and downloading of copyrighted material, and require those seeking to upload material such as text, audio or video files and performances to seek permission from the copyright holder and pay a fee.
Speaking to the Xinhua state news agency regarding the closedowns of offending websites, Liu Jie, a high ranking official with the Chinese National Copyright Administration confirmed that:
"Since the regulation took effect on July 1, the administration has enhanced supervision and punishment of online copyright violation."
