China And UK Launch Business Dispute Resolution Centre

by Mary Swire, for LawAndTax-News.com, Hong Kong

11 April 2006

At a ceremony in Beijing last Thursday, Lord Woolf, former Lord Chief Justice and Chair of CEDR’s International Advisory Council, and Secretary General Dong Songgen of CCPIT launched a landmark international mediation centre alliance to help European and Chinese businesses resolve disputes without having to go to court in a foreign jurisdiction.

CCPIT (China Council for the Promotion of International Trade) and CEDR (Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution) are working together to create the UK-China Mediation Centre, located in Beijing and London, for the mediation of Chinese-European disputes.

Commenting on the announcement, Lord Woolf of Barnes explained that:

“Whilst the Chinese have a long tradition of informal mediation in business disputes, our colleagues at CCPIT are interested in providing current business mediation as a method of resolving international disputes as part of a civil justice system.“
