China And Peru Discuss Increasing IP Protections

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce on Thursday announced the conclusion of the third round of China-Peru free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations.

The talks were held in Beijing recently, and involved discussion of issues such as tariff reductions for trade in goods, market access, rules of origin, customs procedures, technical barriers to trade, dispute settlement mechanisms, trade remedies, IPR protection and geographical indications.

Views were also exchanged on environmental protection matters.

On 7th September , 2007, the Chinese President Hu Jintao and Peruvian President Alan Garcia Pérez jointly announced the launch of FTA negotiations between the two countries.

According to the Chinese authorities, Peru is a key Chinese trade and investment partner in Latin America. In 2007, bilateral trade hit more than USD6bn, up 49.59% year on year.

The next round of negotiations will be held in July in Lima.
