London's Russian-owned Chelsea Football Club, known colloquially as Chelski after its purchase by oligarch Roman Abramovich, has lost a case against Leeds-based drinks firm Europa Wines, which is marketing an alcopop under the brand name Chelski Blue.
The Patent Office's Trademarks Registry has denied an attempt to reclaim the trademark by Chelsea FC and found in favour of Europa which plans to start producing Chelski Blue vodka drinks in September. Chelsea was even ordered to pay GBP2,750 towards Europa's costs.
Tiny Europa, with just four staff, saw an opportunity when the name Chelski became current in 2003, and registered it as a trademark for bed and bath linen, alcoholic and soft drinks.
Chelsea FC has registered its own trademark rights to Chelski, but the registration did not cover "possible brand extensions as products of interest".
It is not known whether Chelsea will appeal against the ruling.
