Charges Against Black Expanded

by Glen Shapiro, LawAndTax-News.com, New York

20 December 2005

It emerged last week that disgraced media mogul Conrad Black has had the charges against him augmented, meaning that he is now facing a maximum prison sentence of 95 years if found guilty.

In addition to the eight counts of mail and wire fraud with which he was charged last month and to which he pleaded not guilty, Lord Black is now facing one count each of racketeering, obstruction of justice, money laundering and wire fraud.

According to the Associated Press, Black's defense lawyer, Edward Greenspan argued that:

"This is a blatant example of over-reaching by the prosecutor. These latest allegations add nothing new to the indictment and, when we are given the opportunity, they will be demonstrated to be unfounded as well."
