The Cayman Islands has doubled its departure tax for air passengers from its current CI$8.00 (US$10.00) to CI$16.00 (US$20.00). The departure tax is not levied by Cayman Airways, which operates out of Owen Roberts International Airport on Grand Cayman, but by the government. The tax increase will go into effect when the law which includes it is officially published, although a date for this is not yet known.
Some of the additional revenue from the increased tax will be put into an environmental protection fund, but the bulk of it will go to the Civil Aviation Authority
The Associated Press reported Deputy Financial Secretary, Joel Walton, as saying that the increase brings the Cayman Island's departure tax into line with other Caribbean islands. The increase does not affect the cruise ship departure tax.
