The Cayman government has announced an immigration amnesty that will allow individuals currently residing illegally in the jurisdiction the opportunity to leave without fear of prosecution.
According to a government statement, the amnesty period will run from 18th October until 1st November (inclusive), and will apply to persons who do not possess a work permit or any other valid authorisation to remain in the Islands.
After the amnesty period has expired, the Cayman authorities warn that the Department of Immigration “will actively seek out persons” who remain illegally. Culprits may be liable for a fine of up to CI$20,000 (US$24,200) or a five year imprisonment.
The department also warned employers that work permits will not be granted to employees residing on the island illegally, and firms or individuals who knowingly assist a person to remain illegally face fines of up to CI$50,000.
