Caribbean Leaders Hope Chirac Will Rein Back OECD

All 16 member states of the Cariforum trading group attended a one-day Franco-Caribbean summit on Guadeloupe last week, with the agenda including drug smuggling, debt relief and immigration.

President Chirac opened the summit with a speech pledging strong support for the region: "France refuses to envisage that activities that contribute to socio-economic equilibrium in producer regions should be put in peril under pressure from the big multinationals. This is the message that we are constantly pressing upon our partners in the (European) Union," said the French President.

Antiguan PM Lester Bird was delegated by the assembled leaders to ask Chirac to stop publication of the threatened OECD 'black list' of tax havens to be targeted with sanctions.
