London's Privy Council is to be replaced in November by the new Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) as the final court of appeal for Caribbean members of the Commonwealth, it was confirmed recently.
According to a report from The Lawyer news service this week, the move follows majority votes from nearly all of the Caribbean Commonwealth states, although the results of some parliamentary votes on the legislation in question remain unannounced.
The Lawyer revealed that the November inauguration of the CCJ will take place despite a pending Privy Council case brought by the opposition Jamaica Labour Party, which claims that the new court can only be ratified by holding a referendum.
The CCJ is expected to hear its first case in March 2005.
