Canada's small and medium enterprises have been encouraged to use Hong Kong as their ‘Smart Link’ to the Chinese markets.
Addressing the ‘Hong Kong: Your Smart Link to China’ business forum organised by the Hong Kong-Canada Business Association in Toronto, Hazel McCallion, Mayor of the Canadian city of Mississauga, urged SMEs to "go through Hong Kong to China.”
“Hong Kong provides the expertise and the economic infrastructures that are crucial for Canadian companies to get into China's lucrative market,” she explained.
Mayor McCallion added that Hong Kong also provides a legal safety net for foreign firms as Canadian companies would have a better chance of getting a settlement under Hong Kong's Common Law system should there be a business dispute.
Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada), Mr Bassanio So, echoed the Mayor’s views, adding that Hong Kong offered the advantages of physical proximity and well developed economic links with the mainland, as well as having an independent judicial system.
