The Canadian government has launched two web sites to assist small businesses to tap into the e-commerce industry. Speaking at a news briefing during the Canadian E-Business Leadership Forum, hosted this week by Forrester Research, Industry Minister Brian Tobin said the new online initiatives are 'vital to expanding Canada's capacity to get online.'
The Ebiz.enable web site is an information based resource offering advice for businesses making a first-time foray into e-commerce. 'It is designed to help small businesses in effect take a diagnostic ... what your skill sets are, what your capacity is, what you need to get online and become e-enabled quickly,' explained Mr Tobin. The second web site is SourceCAN, which acts as an electronic marketplace to link-up Canadian businesses with e-commerce opportunities both nationally and internationally.
The Canadian E-Business Leadership Forum is part of a series of ten forums taking place in Canada during 2001. The aim of the forums is to provide and promote opportunities for industry players to develop successful business strategies and discover the latest developments. John H Tory, president and ceo of TV Network company, Rogers Cable, said: 'The Forum is an acknowledgement of the value of the Canadian market. Over the past two years as Rogers has been building a robust cable network for this market, we have watched this market grow and become a more prominent player in the global Internet economy.'
Also speaking at the Forum was Jean C Monty, ceo of BCE Emergis, a leading provider of e-commerce services and exchanges, who said: 'Canada holds the opportunity to continue building on its leadership position in eBusiness. And Forrester's Forum will allow us to further that leadership by sharing ideas and new information.'
According to Forrester's research, Canadian B2B e-commerce will surpass C$270 billion by 2005 making it one of the world's largest Internet economies.
